The evolution from SEO to AEO to AI Agent Preference, and why it determines which businesses win in the agent economy.
AI Agent Preference is the discipline of ensuring AI agents choose your business over competitors when executing transactions on behalf of consumers. SEO optimized for search engines. AEO optimized for answer engines. AI Agent Preference measures whether AI agents will actually book you, quote you, and pay you, not just mention you.
AI agents are not just answering questions anymore. They are taking action. When a consumer tells their agent to "book me an emergency plumber" or "schedule a dentist for next week," the agent picks one business and transacts. Every other business in the consideration set loses the customer. The business the agent prefers wins.
GradeForAI measures that preference directly, through the AI Agent Preference Score: a 0-100 metric calculated across four dimensions of what actually makes an agent pick one business over another.
For two decades, businesses optimized for search engines. That was SEO. Then AI chatbots arrived and businesses started optimizing to get cited in AI-generated answers. That became AEO. Now AI agents are doing more than surface information, they are completing transactions, and the next optimization discipline is about being the business the agent chooses.
| SEO | AEO | AI Agent Preference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimizes for | Search engines (ranking) | Answer engines (citation) | AI agents (transactional preference) |
| Goal | Get ranked | Get mentioned | Get chosen first |
| Key question | Can they find me? | Do they talk about me? | Will the agent pick me? |
| Primary signals | Backlinks, content, keywords | Brand mentions, authoritative content | Booking integrations, structured data, entity coherence, competitive position |
| Outcome | Clicks and impressions | Share of AI answer space | Revenue from agent-preferred transactions |
SEO and AEO are about visibility. AI Agent Preference is about operability and selection. A business with perfect SEO and AEO but zero AI Agent Preference is visible but unselectable. AI agents can find it, even recommend it, but when they try to book, pay, or transact, they fail and route the customer somewhere else.
The AI Agent Preference Score is a 0-100 composite built from four dimensions. Each measures a distinct capability an AI agent needs to prefer your business over a competitor.
Can AI agents physically navigate your site? Semantic HTML, graduated CAPTCHA handling, form accessibility, keyboard navigation, and how the site treats automated visitors. If the agent cannot get through the front door, nothing else matters.
Can AI agents complete the core transaction your business depends on? Booking for trades, consultation scheduling for legal, patient portal access for medical, reservations for restaurants. This dimension includes booking platform integrations and the commerce protocols AI agents rely on to act.
Will the data an agent extracts lead to a successful transaction? We cross-check NAP, hours, identity, and pricing across your site and against authoritative public sources. Combines entity coherence, operational data structure, and data accuracy into one measure of trust.
How does your agent preference compare to direct competitors in your vertical and market? An agent choosing between providers picks the one that is easier to prefer. This dimension is derived from every business scored in our database.
Scores map to six capability bands. Each band describes what AI agents can actually do with a business at that score, not a bell-curve label.
| Score | Band | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 90-100 | Agent Preferred | AI agents choose this business first, every time. |
| 70-89 | Agent Optimized | AI agents can transact with this business reliably. |
| 50-69 | Agent Ready | AI agents can work with this business but with friction. |
| 30-49 | Agent Functional | AI agents struggle to complete tasks with this business. |
| 10-29 | Agent Detected | AI agents can find this business but cannot do business with it. |
| 0-9 | Agent Incompatible | AI agents skip this business entirely. |
From AAO to AI Agent Preference. GradeForAI originally measured AI Agent Optimization (AAO) across six dimensions. As the AI agent economy matured, we restructured the scoring to focus on what actually determines which business an agent selects: preference.
The AI Agent Preference Score replaced the AAO Score as the headline metric in April 2026. The four-dimension model, Agent Accessibility, Transaction Completeness, Data Reliability, and Competitive Position, is more precise, more actionable, and more durable than the original framework.
The original six-dimension AAO scores continue to be calculated and stored for every scan to power historical trend analysis and research, and remain accessible through the API.
This is not a theoretical framework for 2030. AI agents are already operating in the real world. ChatGPT has tools. Claude and Gemini can take action. Perplexity ships an agent browser. Consumers are starting to delegate simple transactions to these agents. The businesses the agents cannot transact with are already losing customers they never knew they had.
We scored 500,000+ businesses across 183 verticals and 395 cities. The average AI Agent Preference Score is 33/100. 89% of service businesses score below Agent Ready, which means when a customer asks an AI agent to take action, nine out of ten local businesses get skipped.
The bar is low. Early movers win disproportionately. The businesses that close this gap first take the customers.
Five actions, in priority order, that move the needle on your AI Agent Preference Score.
An agent-accessible booking platform (Calendly, Square Appointments, Housecall Pro, etc.) is the single biggest lift on Transaction Completeness.
LocalBusiness, Service, OpeningHoursSpecification, and pricing schema. Agents use this to determine whether you can fulfill the request.
NAP, hours, and identity must match across your site, Google Business Profile, and major directories. Data conflicts break agent trust.
Agents need to know what things cost before they quote or book. Publish pricing, ranges, or quote forms in machine-readable formats.
